What's the difference between strand oiling and full rope oiling ?

Differences Between Strand Oiling and Full Rope Oiling for Steel Wire Ropes

Oiling Position

  • Strand oiling: Oil is applied to every small strand of the rope, seeping into the gaps between inner wires to better protect each wire.

  • Full rope oiling: Oil is only coated on the outer surface of the whole rope, mostly covering the outer layer, offering weaker protection for inner wires.

Lubrication Effect

  • Strand oiling: Oil works directly on inner strand wires, greatly reducing friction and wear between wires. It also improves flexibility and fatigue resistance effectively.

  • Full rope oiling: It reduces friction between the rope and external objects to some extent, but provides limited lubrication for inner wires.

Rust Resistance

  • Strand oiling: The oil film separates wires from air and moisture, preventing rust efficiently. It works especially well for ropes exposed to corrosive materials.

  • Full rope oiling: It forms a surface protective layer but cannot fully cover inner wires, so its rust resistance is poorer.

Construction Difficulty

  • Strand oiling: Relatively complex operation, requiring special equipment and techniques to apply oil evenly on strands, leading to higher costs.

  • Full rope oiling: Simple and fast during production, usually done by dipping the whole rope. It has high efficiency and low cost.

Application Scenarios

  • Strand oiling: Used in high-demand situations like port lifting, where excellent wear resistance, fatigue resistance and rust protection are required.

  • Full rope oiling: Suitable for low-demand scenarios or projects focusing on cost and efficiency, such as general hoisting work.
